DePauw Slang

Know the slang, know the school. The following is a list of things you really need to know before coming to DePauw. The more of these words you know, the better off you’ll be.

Boulder run

– Running naked around the East College boulder on the first snow fall of the year— campus tradition

Bowman

– Pond on campus where frat guys are thrown after presenting a lavaliere or engagement ring to their girlfriends.

The Bubble

– DePauw’s sheltered community nature.

CCM

– Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media where the newspaper, radio, and television station is located.

Camp DePauw

– Affectionate name attached to first-year seminar ice breaker games.

Campus Golf

– Campus favorite that involves golf clubs, tennis balls, and stationary objects on campus serving as golf holes. Students play this game all over campus on nice days in the fall and spring.

Dells

– Wooded area behind South Quad dorms, prime (and only) sledding spot when it snows.

Depauwperator

– This is the term used for DePauw’s Operator. Dial “0” on any campus phone, and they will give you any number you need on campus or in Greencastle. Call (765) 658-4800 if you are not using a campus phone.

The Facebook

– DePauw’s latest technological advancement that allows students to link up online and with other universities— amazingly addictive.

Fishbowl

– Meeting area in the Hub that is surrounded in glass, making it very much a fish bowl.

Fratastic

– Term used to describe most DePauw guys. The adjective encompasses regularly wearing popped collars, playing football in your front yard, and sitting outside of your house with a beer bong more than three days of the week.

GCB

– Marvin’s garlic cheeseburgers are the hottest item on campus. Students love them and often use ranch dressing as a dip on the burger—greatest creation ever.

HoScho

– Honors Scholars Program of Distinction.

The Hub

– Student Memorial Union Building where many students eat, check mail, and shop at the bookstore.

ITAP

– Information Technology Associates Program (kids with computers).

Lil’ 5

– Spring bike race that weaves through the streets on campus—all day party.

Marv’s

– Home of the GCB, GCCB, and a whole host of other garlic and ranch coated delicacies.

MeFe

– Media Fellows Program of Distinction.

Mofo

– Management Fellows Program of Distinction.

Monon Bell

– Beloved prize of the DePauw vs. Wabash football game.

PAC

– Performing Arts Center.

Safe Ride

– Shuttle with bright flashing lights that drives students from the bar to campus—second best creation ever, next to the GCB.

S & M

– Julian Science and Math Building.

RA

– Resident’s Assistant.

Riptide

– Concoction of beer, lemonade, and vodka found in most coolers.

Roy O

– Main campus library—students spend many an evening with Roy O.

Wallies

– Wabash men, also referred to as little giants or sheep lovers. They are DePauw’s biggest rival in football and love to come to DePauw to find women.

Wally World

– Wal-Mart, no matter if you have never set foot in one in your life, it will become one of your most favorite places.
