Bontemps, Arna. Great Slave Narratives. Boston: Beacon Press, 1969. Carl McClean, the black parent, thought this a better book for high school students than Huckleberry Finn. Students may want to read this book, compare it to Huck Finn, and discuss whether every student should be required to read it.
