Elisha is a Holocaust survivor who still feels haunted by the memories of the atrocities that he has experienced. He feels that when he acts, others watch and are actually a part of him. For instance, while he contemplates the killing of Dawson, he speaks with himself as a boy, his father, his mother, a beggar who has taught him to tell night from day, and his beloved master (rabbi). They together have caused the formation, the composite, that is Elisha; they have created his identity, and during the novel they guide him during his dilemma in regard to the execution of Dawson.
