The novel follows the main character from his youth up through his two marriages, and on into his middle years.
Like many Dickens novels, it is notable for its examination of various aspects of the British social system of the time. It does this by introducing many other characters. The most famous of these supporting characters are Mr. Micawber and Uriah Heep.
