In what ways does our own society's notion of Hell seem the same or different than Dante's?
Dante's description of Hell has allegedly affected the western world's view of the place of the Eternal Punishment

I think this depends on your religion. Every religion has its own concept of hell. Taking the case of the Roman Catholic religion, it views hell as a fiery place where one experiences torture, punishment, suffering, etc.
With regard to Dante's Inferno, I don't think there's any difference at all. His concept of hell is also full of punishment and torture. Depending on the person's sin, he/she (upon reaching hell) will experience the same kind of torture or punishment that he has inflicted to others. For example, a man who beats his children and his wife dies without any remorse. Naturally, he goes to hell. According to Dante's concept of hell, his punishment will be beating as well. The other entities in hell will do to him whatever it is that he has done to his family.
I believe this is what affected the society's concept of hell - that it will be a repeat of the things they had done on earth.
