Whether this is real or not is dependent on the point of view of the reader. What is valid and quite verifiable is that Dante used real characters featured throughout his journey of hell. He criticized Florentine politicans who were corrupt and lacked the vision of governing that took into account social interests as opposed to personal ones, from Dante's point of view. His inclusion of his own sins at different points, lends a voice and element of credence to his work. This makes it more appreciative by more audiences.
