"Dalva," by Jim Harrison is a story about Dalva Northridge.  She is 45, from Nebraska and decides to search for her illegitimate son who she gave up for adoption.  She is a woman who has suffered great loss in her life and this is her story.  It is also a story of the Sioux Nation and the loss they have suffered and are still suffering from the white man.  The story is about Michael, a drunk professor who uses Dalvafor his support system and who narrates the second part of the novel.  This novel gives the reader a window into the world of ranching in Nebraska and the lives of those who still struggle to hold on to that life style.

There are several good reading guides out there but the guide I used when my book club did this book is linked below.  Hope this helps.
