Well, with a line like "fat, black heart" in the last stanza amidst a number of other negative images, I am going to have to argue that Sylvia was not a huge fan of her daddy. Perhaps she loved him and he did not love her, and for that, she now hates him, wishing to be rid of even the memory of him.

In addition, the references to the Germans and Jews is metaphorical because of how the Germans took the lives of the Jews...killed them, just as a vampire might suck the blood out of his/her victims or a spider sucks the life out of a fly caught in its web. In many ways, the death of her father "killed" Sylvia Plath. It was a horribly painful thing for her to lose her father.

Plath uses German words to emphasize the brutality of the Germans and their strength over the Jews as she likens herself to a Jew. In the first stanza she states, "Achoo," a take on the sound of a sneeze. She ends the third stanza with "Ach, du," again reinforcing the motif of German strength. In the sixth stanza it becomes the repetition of "Ich, ich, ich, ich." In stanza nine, "Luftwaffe," and in...

Plath references Germans in two ways. First of all, the Germans who have "Aryan eye, bright blue" and "a swastika" are likened to Daddy. These are the Germans of Hitler's world. Both are brutes and "every woman adores a Fascist."However, she considers that she, herself, could be a German Jew: "Chuffing me off like a Jew." Plath goes on to say, "With my gypsy ancestress...I may be a bit of a...

In "Daddy" Plath conveys the the character of her father through biting, harsh imagery. She begins in stanza two by saying, "Daddy, I have had to kill you." Plath's father died while she was young, ten years old, and his absence and his memory have haunted her in her adult life. She then likens Daddy to a German with a "brute heart." Next, the imagery changes to Daddy as the devil with "a cleft in your...
