Early Life

Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast in Northern Ireland to parents of the professional middle class in 1898. His father, Albert Lewis, was a successful and well-to-do solicitor who nonetheless always felt threatened by poverty. Lewis’s mother, Florence Hamilton, was well educated, having a degree in mathematics and logic, and she had talent in the humanities as well.
