The theme of family runs in a dual manner throughout the novel.  You have two families, one black and one white.  Both fathers it can be argued lost their sons.  The theme becomes more complex due to the race relationships in the novel.  In a sense, I think Paton is commenting on the fact that the situations of the blacks in South African contributed to the destruction of both families.  And that in order to heal and prevent further loss people must work together.
