In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Reverend John Hale is called to Salem from Beverly (I guess that must be part of Boston because he's also identified as being from Boston) to try to figure out what's wrong with Betty Parris.  The doctor can not identify any physical illness that can be causing her symptoms and so Hale has been called to see if there's a supernatural cause (the Devil/witchcraft) for Betty's condition.

According to Miller's notes, Hale is like a doctor on his first house call, which implies that he has never before found a witch.  He did investigate one woman, but found she was not a witch.
