Faith and hardwork were the cornerstones of Puritan life. A day off of work usually involved praying all the harder.
Puritans did not engage in usual forms of entertainment such as dancing or any sort of frivolity. They believed that the devil was present in all forms of activity that took one's mind off of the worship of God.
"Given the importance of good deeds and hard work, as well as the harsh conditions of life in early America, there was little time for pleasure. Many of the pleasures we take for granted, such as dancing, were deemed frivolous and were not permitted."
"Every facet of life was touched by the rigid teachings of the church, which were strictly enforced. Failure to conform met with harsh penalties, the most severe of which was death by hanging."
The only acceptable form of entertainment would be reading the Bible.
