When Reverend Hale decides that he believes John Proctor's confession of adultery with Abigail Williams, and she claims that it is a lie, he turns and says that she always seemed false to him.

Abigail immediately begins writhing in horror, pretending to see a spirit flying around the courtroom in the shape of a bird.  She calls out that it is a wicked thing to do, and declares that it is the spirit of Mary Warren.

The girls mimic everything that Mary says, giving a grand performance, stunning the court.  Danforth and the others forget for a minute about the adultery and again are captivated by Abigail's and the girls display of appearing to be threatened by an invisible spirit.

This causes a great commotion in the court.
