This was the beginning of the famous Salem Witch Trials. They began in 1692 and ended in 1693, roughly 150 people were executed for 'witchcraft'. Neighbors turned against each other and the town was torn apart by witch fever. People were unjustly jailed and in many cases exectured for no reason. Cotton Mather and Samuel Parris were key figures in these times. Many 'tests' were performed to see if one was a witch including binding ones arms and legs and tossing them into water. If they drown then s/he's not a witch and if s/he floats s/he's a witch.
