After she sees the accusations bring her power, she becomes the ringleader of the other girls who accuse many innocent people of being witches. When she is almost exposed as an adulteress, her defensive actions against the allegations of John Proctor enable her to turn the tables on him and Proctor is the one who ends up in jail and ultimately losing his life. This is not something that Abigail had planned. All she really wanted was to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor so she could marry John. However, even she is not clever enough to pull off that plan and her accusations backfire. She is then forced to leave Salem but not before causing great pain and injury to many innocent people.
