At the end of "The Crucible," how has the conflict shaped Hale's beliefs and values?

    Hale has waffled at various times in the play. At the play's end, Hale is willing to take a stand, though he still does so via weak means. By that I mean, he still acts as though it is Elizabeth Proctor's place to save her husband, not his…but that aside, at the play's end, Hale has come to see just what the conflict is costing the community, and what a tragedy it is that John Proctor should have to die over this. He recognizes the sin of pride that entire community is engaged in, one that leads them away from true humble virtue.
