Do any of the characters in "The Crucible" suggest ways in which a more peaceable outcome might have been achieved?

Posted by gbeatty on Tuesday May 6, 2008 at 11:44 AMThe real question is not if any more peaceable solutions are suggested—but if any of them would have worked, given this particular mix of characters. Here's an example. Abigail clearly wanted more from John Proctor, and, just as clearly, her emotional and sexual frustrations are part of what drives the later "witchcraft," which leads to the violent and deadly resolution. If Proctor had slept with her, or even lied to her promising he'd leave his wife soon, the storm might have been warded off. But could John Proctor do this? He changed his mind, but did he ever lie or keep doing what he knew was wrong?
