The history of the Puritans seeking a location where they could practice their form of religion without interference starts in 1608, when a group moved from England to the Holland. They lived there for a time, but discovered that their children were being influenced by Dutch society. They did not want this influence in their lives. So they joined another group of British Puritans on board the Mayflower and sailed to America.
The Puritans in "The Crucible," live in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, 71 years earlier, in 1621, their ancestors came to America from England on the Mayflower in search of religious freedom.
The group is so named, because they wanted to purify their own form of Protestantism and be allowed to live without interference from society.
