John and Elizabeth's relationship is still strained because of his infidelity. Their conversation is stiff; they don't seem comfortable with each other. Just like their marriage, the stew needs more seasoning, which John adds. He contends that he's tried to do everything he can to make up for his indiscretion, but she continues to be cold to him. After the passionate outbursts of the previous scene with the "naming" of witches, this opening scene in Act II is by contrast shows a distance between the two people. Their marriage is suffering from unresolved problems.
Deputy Governor Danforth is in charge of the court.
