John is angry because he feels he has done everything in his power to restore Elizabeth's trust in him after his affair with Abigail. He feels she is continuing to punish him in spite of the fact that he has had no real contact with Abigail since Elizabeth threw her out of the Proctor house. When he runs into her by accident, Elizabeth assumes the worst and insinuates that John of purposely met with Abigail. John is a his wit's end because he cannot seem to regain Elizabeth's trust.
