I don't think this is true.  At first, we know Elizabeth is hurt and angry...both at Abigail and John.  However, as the witch trials begin, Elizabeth lies about why she "put Abigail out" of her house in order to protect John's reputation with the church.  It is the first time she has lied in her life, and she does not know it is a test.  John has already confessed and believes she will tell the truth to the court, proving she is innocent of witchcraft.  However, all it does is bring John into the shadow of doubt and lechery and he, too, is accused of fraternizing with the Devil.  Elizabeth does not use the witch trials to get John to denounce Abigail.  It is only at the beginning, before Elizabeth is accused, that she urges John to tell what he knows about this girl and put the nonsense to rest in the community.
