Most people believe that Miller was using "The Crucible" with its tale of the Salem Witchcraft Trials in order to criticize McCarthyism. Like John Proctor, Miller spoke out about what he saw as problems in society. Miller was called before the House Committee on Un-American Activities and asked to give names of people who he has seen attending meetings of the American Communist Party. Like Proctor, he refused to lie. He simply refused to give the names and was convicted of contempt of Congress in 1957. And like Proctor who saw that the girls were lying, Miller was convinced the McCarthy was not being all that truthful in his accusations. In the end, Miller was proven right and McCarthy was censured by the Senate for his actions. However, given the times,no one would back a play that criticized McCarthy directly. By using an analogy to the witchcraft trials, people understood Miller's message and he was able to keep working. Posted by ms-mcgregor on Jan 20, 2009. |
