This would be a good question for the discussion boards so you would get many responses. This statement is absolutely true. Through conflict, John and Elizabeth discover they absolutely love one another and the honor they both hold for one another and their families becomes painfully clear. Rebecca Nurse is another who goes to her death unwaveringly. She is older than most of the other "witches," and perhaps has considered her life a good and long one, but that does not make facing death any easier. Her bravery and sense of honor and the love she has for God is very clear. Conflict in this play brings out the ugliness in so many characters--Abigail Williams, The Putnams, the judges themselves. Without conflict, we are not tried. Without being tried in life, we do not know of what we are capable. Without rain their can be no rainbows. Posted by amy-lepore on Jul 3, 2008. |
