There are many conflicts in this play. They are all the result of human nature, greed, the desire for power, temptation, etc. For instance, the politics of the matter bring about the deaths of many in the town. Because the Puritans do not give much room for forgiveness, once the sentences of Rebecca Nurse and John Proctor are passed...even though considerable doubt has crept into the judges' minds about the girls' testimony. The Putnams cause much of the angst in the town. Mr. Putnam is greedy and attempts to claim land to which he has no legal attachment. Mrs. Putnam is jealous of women in town whose children and grandchildren are still alive. The Putnam children, except for Ruth, have all passed on. Rebecca Nurse is one of her primary targets since she is a midwife and delivered many of the Putman children. Abigail Williams gives into her temptations and seduces John Proctor. This causes problems between John and his wife, Elizabeth, as well as between Elizabeth and Abigail. Conflicts such as these are not specific to Puritan society. They are universal and will be present as long as human beings are around. Posted by amy-lepore on May 21, 2008. |
