The characters in the play who have closed minds refusing to accept common sense and logic over sensationalism and fear respond predictably for the most part. They are the ones who cry, "Witch!". The characters who use reason and sense also respond somewhat predictably in that they deny the witch accusations, but some respond in an unexpected way such as John Proctor's refusal to save himself.
