    Some cultures use a patronymic (a form of the father's name) as a child's middle or even last name. For instance, the Viking leader Leif Erikson was the son of a man named Erik, thus Erik's son. The Enotes guide to the charaacters in Funeral in Berlin states that the usual order for Russian names is (1) given name, (2) patronymic, and (3) family name. Since the full names of Rodion and Dunya are "Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov" and "Avdotya Romanovna Raskolnikova," their patronymics are "Romanovich" (masc.) and "Romanovna" (fem.), signifying that they are the children of Roman Raskolnikov.
