Edmund Dantes, the central character in the book, is a young man who has everything going for him. At nineteen, he is about to achieve commercial success and marry the girl that he loves, but because of the jealousy of a diverse group of four unscrupulous men, Dantes is unjustly imprisoned for fourteen years. Upon his release, Dantes acquires a treasure that a fellow prisoner has told him about, which he finds on the island of Monte Cristo. Giving himself the title of the Count of Monte Cristo, Dantes then sets himself to the task of rewarding those who have been kind to him, and taking vengeance on those who have treated him wrongly.
