I am seized with a cataleptic fit....When you seeme motionless, cold, and all appearances dead, then and not until then force my teeth apart with the knife, and pour eight to ten drops of the liquid down my throat and I shall perhaps revive.

The Abbe Faria instructs Edmund Dantes in how to treat him if he has a cataleptic seizure.  The red liquid is most likely a mercury compound.

The second of his attacks, the third will kill him, the Abbe tells Edmund.  Then the Abbe tells Dantes all about how he acquired the treasure and how to find it.
