The neutral ground on which the trade could be made is the Isle of Monte Cristo, Dantes suggests. Of course, Dantes must be careful that the Italian sailors do not suspect anything else or he risks losing the treasure if he finds it.
The cargo ship arrives. The next day Dantes takes powder and shot, expressing a desire to hunt the wild goats. When his comrades fire a signal shot for the meal, they see him stagger and fall. Dantes is bleeding and semiconscious. When they insist on carrying him, he tells them he does not have the strength and urges them give him provisions and to go on and return after they sell their stolen goods.
Of course, while they sail on to port, Dantes follows the map of the deceased abbe and discovers the treasure.
