Dantes is so angry toward the people who unjustly sent him to prison, he becomes consumed with seeking revenge, believing that making them suffer is providential. In the years that it takes for Dantes to seek revenge, he experiences no joy, even though he is absurdly wealthy and meets people who would show him love. In the end, Dantes realizes that those years spent hating others were as lost as the ones he spent in jail.
