Edmond Dantes is intrinscally trusting and believes that he can have faith in his friends.  This is shown even when he is faced with an incriminating letter--he is sure it's all a big mistake.

In prison, he loses that faith, and begins to trust only in revenge.  He fundamentally changes from the underlying principle that all men are good to believe that underneath, all men are evil.  This allows him to enact his revenge as he does.
