Roth was born in Newark, New Jersey, on March 19, 1933, into a working-class Jewish family. He attended Rutgers University (1950–1951), then transferred to Bucknell University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in English in 1954. He received his master’s degree in English from the University of Chicago in 1955; then he briefly joined the United States Army.
