Toni Morrison was born in 1931, less than two years after the stock market crashed and the United States fell into a general economic depression that continued until World War I. The decade of the 1930s was one of economic hardships for most poor and working-class people. For African Americans, especially the three-quarters of that population that lived in the South, it was dire. Those who migrated to northern urban areas from the rural South in search of better living conditions and employment opportunities quickly learned that whites would not hire them because they were African Americans.
