The Lowdown On The Inside Scoop

Connecticut College Slang

  • Know the slang, know the school. The following is a list of things you really need to know before coming to Connecticut College. The more of these words you know, the better off you’ll be.

  • Short for Athletic Center—can refer to the whole complex or just part of it.

  • The Arboretum. Rarely used.

  • The practice space for campus bands.

  • Coast Guard Academy cadets. Can be slightly derogatory.

  • Connecticut College. A less preferred variant is “Conn Coll.”

  • Cro–Crosier Williams Student Center, the hub of social activity on campus.

  • Multipurpose room in the second floor of Crosier Williams Student Center.

  • Field outside of the student center where barbeques and kegs are held.

  • Themed parties where students get tickets and are supposed to anonymously invite their crushes to a dance. Student apathy for crush parties prevents them from ever being a success.

  • A fee that students are collectively assessed to pay for damages to their dorm during the year. These vary wildly from dorm to dorm.

  • Annual senior streak from across campus.

  • A sometimes derogatory, sometimes affectionate name for Hamilton and Marshall Houses.

  • The convenience store in the student center, which is never open when you want it.

  • Jane Addams House.

  • Judiciary Board. Students who review alleged violations of the Honor Code.

  • Short for Katharine Blunt House.

  • New England Small College Athletic Conference, the conference in which most of Conn’s varsity sports compete.

  • Three dorms in Central Campus (Blackstone, Branford, and Plant) and the green in between. That’s right, three.

  • The unfortunate experience of being forced to sleep outside your room because your roommate is hooking up with someone.

  • Student Government Association.

  • The standard uniform for girls at parties—a skimpy tank top, usually worn with a pair of black pants.

  • Thursday Night Event. Events—usually dances, but sometimes more novel events—that dorms orchestrate and put on for the rest of the campus.
