The Story:
Nat Turner was imprisoned and awaiting his death as a result of leading a slave insurrection. A self-proclaimed preacher, Turner was unable to pray and felt abandoned by his God. Thomas Gray arrived to obtain a confession. Gray’s concept of his job was to prove that Nat Turner was not a typical slave but a fanatic whose revolt was an isolated event and therefore no threat to the institution of slavery.
