The family is very poor, so when Mama begins to have children with Raymond, adding to her already existing family, and he is unable to provide for the family, she is increasingly burdened with earning money for the family. He provides a house, but his family lives with them, so it is crowded.
She is unhappy because she knows that the more children they have, the harder their lives will be.
