Anne receives a letter from her mother telling her that she needs to stop the activism.  Mama tells her how the police have been asking questions about her, and insists that if Anne continues, she'll never be able to come back to Centreville.

Anne responds with anger and determination, and her resolve to continue on her path is strengthened.  Anne has always been angry that her family would accept and give in to the injustice, rather than fight against.  This is the reason that she left Centreville in the first place.  Thus, a continued show of this cowardice and this tendency to "give into the system" makes Anne more determined than ever to try to create some real change.
