    I believe your question is referring to what James Mcbride only found out about his mother when he was an adult. His white mother ran away from rural Virginia to Harlem where she married a black man. However she was the daughter of a failed itinerant Orthodox rabbi. Together with her husband they founded an all-black Baptist church in her home in Red Hook.
