Reader's Guide

Colonial America: Almanac provides a wide range of historical information on the period in United States history between 1565 and 1760. The two-volume set describes the attempts made by European explorers and settlers to establish permanent communities on the North American continent in areas that are now part of the United States. Arranged in fifteen subject chapters, Colonial America: Almanac explores topics such as Native American life before the arrival of European colonists; European exploration, settlement, and colonization of the New World; the history of Africans in America during the colonial period; government and law; arts and culture; and science and medicine.

Additional features

Colonial America: Almanac includes numerous sidebars, some focusing on people associated with the colonial era, others taking a closer look at pivotal events. More than one hundred black-and-white illustrations enliven the text, while cross-references are made to people or events discussed in other chapters. Both volumes contain a timeline, a glossary, research and activity ideas, a bibliography, and a cumulative index providing access to the subjects discussed in Colonial America: Almanac.
