The brave but disillusioned protagonist of the Charles Frazier Civil War novel, Cold Mountain, Inman is recuperating in a hospital bed when the novel begins. He is recovering from a severe neck wound suffered during the terrible siege of Petersburg, and he spends a great deal of time peering from the hospital window at the "sweep of fields and piney woods that stretched to the western horizon." But on this new day, things are slightly...

Narrative intrusion is used similarly for all the characters of Cold Mountain. The narrator stops the action in the story to give us background information on Ada, Inman and Ruby. This background information we are given, such as Ada's sheltered upbringing and Ruby's neglectful one, lends most of the character development in the novel and helps the reader understand why the characters react the way they do and make the choices that they make....

In this chapter, Ada has a flashback where she was at a party, in a new dress that her father had given to her. She caught sight of a woman's back in a mirror, and "the dress the figure wore was the color called 'ashes of roses' and Ada stood, held in place by a sharp stitch of envy for the woman's dress and...the sense of assurance she seemed to evidence in her very posture." She moves, and so does the figure, and she realizes that the...

I might be a little late with this, as I see the question is from November. Perhaps for next year, get the curriculum unit on Cold Mountain produced by The Center for Learning. No, I am not affiliated with them, just a teacher who uses their products and they're mostly good. Spark notes has a decent study guide and quiz too. I often take the Odyssey angle and have students compare/contrast the events/allusions to the Homer's Odyssey. Many get...

There are several teacher-based sites online which offer free lesson plans with study questions and essay topics for novels. Do a web search for "lesson plans, cold mountain" and see what turns up. Two of my favorites are the Discovery Channel and History Channel--since this novel was written about the Civil War, you might have some luck there. Good Luck!

Boy, this was a tough question! It was nowhere to be found in enotes, but I did find an answer on the internet, whether it is THE answer I don't know. I did learn a lot about violins, fiddles and "Cold Mountain", however. Brendan Gleason actually plays the fiddle, for example. The article I found was "Three "Classical" Violins and a Fiddle", and the suggestion I got from this was that the type of fiddle played in "Cold Mountain" was called...
