    Two petty criminals, Dick and Perry travel to Holcomb to rob the Clutter family.  Dick had heard about a rich farming family from a fellow inmate who had worked for them in Kansas; Floyd Wells told Dick that Mr. Clutter had a great deal of money in a safe.

    While the murder of the Clutters was the first known mass murder committed in the United States, the intentions of the two men was originally robbery, not murder.
