In the movie "Capote," Truman Capote reads in the New York Times about the slaying of a family, the Clutters, in Kansas.  After he requests permission of his editor to investigate the first reported mass murder in the United States, Capote travels to Kansas where he becomes enthralled with Perry Smith, one of the murderers, who is an abandoned child as was Capote, and who is very tortured mentally. he is superstitious, nervous, and fatalistic, filled with inconsistencies. Through some bribery, Capote receives a pass to visit Perry at any time.  While Capote manipulates Smith, the convict gets Capote to pay for his defense, art supplies, etc.  With Perry's legal appeals dragging on, Capote cannot go home.

A movie review from the Hartford Courier states that Perry perceives Capote as a guardian angel while Capote sees Perry as a vulnerable man and a potential bestseller.  Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" ushered in a new genre:  the journalistic novel.
