“ I know it was wrong. One thing I never told you about the clutter deal is this. Before I ever went to their house I knew there would be a girl there. I think the main reason I went there was not to rob but to rape the girl. Because I thought a lot about it. That is one reason why I never wanted to turn back when we started to. Even when I saw there was no safe.” (278)

I am writing an essay and would like to use this quote. He said the he should have gotten a lesser sentence than Perry but I feel that he deserved the death because he masterminded the Clutter murder and not just that he wanted to rape the girl.

So, i need help explaining of how the quote supports my topic.

Please help!

You could certainly use this quote to prove that Hickock deserved at least the same penalty as Perry but not because of his desire to rape the Clutter girl.  Because he premeditated his crime, planned it ahead of time, he could have been eligible for the death penalty.

He did not rape the girl; so he could not have been tried for rape, and the jury could not use his confession that he wanted to rape the Clutter daughter when considering his guilt or innocence in the murder case.  Think of it in regards to how we treat sentences for attempted murder differently than those who are sentenced for going through with a murder.  Hickock did not even attempt to rape the Clutter girl; so he could not have been charged with that.

That being said, your quote definitely shows that he planned out what he wanted to do at the Clutter home, that he chose specific victims, and that if he was willing to rape the girl he most likely planned to leave no one alive.  I believe you could use the quote to show premeditation which should have led to a harsher sentence.
