Colby Slang
Know the slang, know the school. The following is a list of things you really need to know before coming to Colby. The more of these words you know, the better off you'll be.
- Beer Die
Colby's own drinking game. It involves stolen tables, dice, and plastic cups.
- Beirut
The second most popular drinking game. It's a lot like Beer Die, except with Ping-Pong balls instead of dice.
- Bob's
Short for Robert's Union, this building houses a dining hall, the campus bookstore, the student newspaper offices, and the campus radio station.
- Bro
Colby's president William “Bro” Adams. Even he calls himself Bro.
- Buck Fates
A clever play on words. Colby's biggest rivalry is with Bates College in (sort of) nearby Lewiston.
- COOT
Colby Outdoor Orientation Trip. Before starting classes, freshmen are thrown into the Maine wilderness for a little less than a week.
- Cotter
The student center, Cotter Union.
- Frat row
The row of small dorms lining the walkway between the library and Bob's. They used to be fraternities.
- HRs
Head Residents. They keep the dorms running smoothly.
- Jan-Plan
January. This is the time of year when you have class for eight hours a week and drink or ski the rest of the time.
- MuleMatch
Online dating service. Wesleyan, Williams, Bowdoin, and Oberlin are also connected to this network. It's not actually used for dating, but it's a wonderful procrastination tool.
- SGA
Student Government Association.
- SPB
Student Programming Board. They plan things like concerts, lectures, and dances.
- The Co-op
The first floor rooms of Mary Low. They have a kitchen and a 100 meal per semester meal plan.
- The Digest
This refers both to the Digest of General Announcements, and the Digest of Civil Discourse. These are e-mails Colby students get every day. On the Digest of General Announcements, students can post information about upcoming events, lost and found items, and rides needed. The Digest of Civil Discourse is a place where people can bring up things that bother them and argue a lot.
- The Echo
The student newspaper.
- The Fishbowl
A study area in Cotter Union.
- The Hill
Mayflower Hill, where Colby is located.
- The Pub
Technically called the Blue Light Pub. It's what it sounds like, an on-campus pub open only to students over 21.
- The Spa
You can't get your nails done at the Spa. It's the only non-dining hall food on campus. It's open when the dining halls aren't and has good food that you actually have to pay for.
- The Street
A big hallway underneath Miller Library. It's full of couches to study (or nap) on, is open 24 hours, and is always heated, making it a nice way to avoid the cold in the winter.
