As the novel begins, Charles Vansant, a recent college graduate, has died from a shark attack while swimming on the Jersey coast. Five days later, there is another attack. A half a dozen more soon follow, but because there have never been any shark sightings, let alone attacks, scientists are skeptical. Vactioners, however, are understandably panicked.
About a week later, two men set off in a boat, which is attacked by the killer shark. They managed to fend off the seven and a half foot menace and kill it. In its belly are human bones.
