We know from history that the people of Pompei ignored the rumblings and ash from Mt. Vesuvius for days before the volcano exploded and sent hot, poisonous gas down on the population. In modern times, some people ignored the warnings of scientists that Mr. St. Helens was going to explode. People in California often refuse to evacuate their homes when fire is bearing down on them. Many people simply refuse to acknowledge that danger or catastrophe is imminent and think they can live through the disaster. They refuse to contemplate the idea they could die. Scientists have said for years that California is going to suffer a huge earthquake sometime in the future. Yet millions of people still live there, including myself. We know we are "created from clay" but refuse to acknowledge the fragility of clay or sometimes, life itself. It's easier and more comforting to ignore something unpleasant and concentrate on more positive things.
