I, Claudius | Adaptations

In 1937, Alexander Korda began filming a motion picture version of I, Claudius. It featured Charles Laughton as Claudius. The screenplay was by Carl Zuckmayer, a German, and was translated into English by June Head. Graves was dismayed by Zuckmayer's treatment and rewrote the screenplay himself. The director Josef von Sternberg then undertook to redo the screenplays. Although some scenes were filmed at Denham Studios, the project bogged down in confusion.
