I Claudius is filled with expertly drawn and memorable characters. The two most important ones are Claudius and Livia. At the start of the novel, Claudius introduces himself as the man "who was once . . . known to my friends and relatives and associates as 'Claudius the Idiot,' or 'That Claudius,' or 'Claudius the Stammerer,' or 'Clau-Clau-Claudius,' or at best as 'Poor Uncle Claudius.'"
