In the story, Tommy and his friend the maple leaf only want to have fun. ...

The way that O'Brien describes what the men carry have both literal and concrete meaning: in terms of what "things" the men carry are all of importance to the men, in so many ways. Some of those ways are both the same, but most are very different. Just because two men carry a poncho, that doesn't necessarily mean the weight of the poncho is the same. One man may carry it for rainy nights, and it may weigh 1 pound, but another man may...

O'Brien's descriptions of what the soldiers carry in Vietnam are part of his characterization. What a soldier carries represents a unique part of his personality and also shows a part of who the soldier is in "The World"--life outside of the war.
His alternating between the descriptions and Cross's thoughts is a style he follows in several of his stories in this short story collection. See "In the Field" for another example. His purpose...

This quote is used in the very first paragraph of the story. It states,

“There was a Sabbath lull in the air, which, in a settlement unused to Sabbath influences, looked ominous.”

In this part of the story, the narrator is describing the setting and explaining how quiet the town was on this particular day. The term “Sabbath lull” refers to the fact that the Sabbath, usually a Sunday, would be a day of rest, when most people...

The lesson of the story concerns the true meaning of love and its value. In the story, Jim and Delia are a young married couple who are, by all appearances, very poor. When Christmas comes, both give up something that is meaningful in order to bring joy to the other. Because they do this out of love, what each one really gives the other is the greatest gift, the gift of love. In possessing the one thing that matters most, Jim and Delia are...
