Despite a few significant gains that forced a modicum of change—the creation of constitutional amendments that established citizenship rights and guaranteed voting rights and equal protection of the law, for example—progress in the civil rights arena was slow, if not nonexistent at times. Not until the 1950s, after almost a century of efforts on the part of blacks, would the issue of civil rights become a nationally celebrated cause....
